Essay / Comparison between Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston
How can two people with such diverse personalities have so much in common? Both are teenagers who see the world very differently. One believes that the world is full of hatred but the other always sees good in it. In the novel The Outsiders written by SE Hinton, such characters exist and appear to be copies of each other. However, if we look closer, these two characters also have a lot in common. Dally Winston and Johnny Cade are the two characters. Dally and Johnny have a lot in common despite having different worldviews. For example, none of these characters place much value on their lives. Johnny Cade is a sullen-looking sixteen-year-old who feels like he has nothing to live for. He even writes a note to Ponyboy saying, "Look, I don't mind dying now." It's worth it. It is worth saving these children. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more reasons to live. Some of their parents came to thank me and I know it was worth it” (178). Johnny thinks his life is worth less than others because of the way he is treated. Likewise, Dallas does not value his life much and is even ready to commit suicide. Ponyboy thinks, "He was dead before he hit the ground." But I knew that was what he wanted,...because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted” (154). Dallas wanted to die because he thought he had nothing left to hold on to. Another reason Johnny and Dally look alike is because they both have parents who don't give them the attention they need. Dally's parents don't care where he is. Dally said, "Shoot, my old man doesn't care if I'm in jail, dead in a car accident, or drunk in the gutter" (88). Obviously his parents don't care if ...... middle of paper ...... the problems are the same they produced two very different personalities. Dally is mean and harsh and believes the world is full of hate. However, Johnny is polite, calm and shy. They are two teenagers who see the world in very different ways..
