  • Essay / Essay on 1970s - 1687

The decade of the 1970s impacted the United States and left the economy in ruins. The stock market was a mess and people didn't really want to deal with stocks. The stock market lost about forty percent over an 18-month period, which is a significant amount considering the amount of money invested in it. Additionally, during the energy crisis and economic collapse, the United States had to pay twelve dollars for a barrel of oil instead of the usual eight. On the other hand, the impact happened through famous people, even through music and fashion. The 1970s welcomed figures like John Travolta and three of the presidents of the United States: Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and James Carter. The 1970s were also the decade of the creation of punk rock and disco. Some fashion was even affected by musical styles. Everything that happened in the 1970s still has an effect on us today, especially the economy. The 1970s were marked by many events and each of them still affects us today. The year 1972 was the year of Nixon's foreign policy and the Munich massacre. Nixon's foreign policy made Richard Nixon the first president to visit China. This is part of what made him famous today because it helped the United States. It also “opened the communist nation to American commerce and reopened diplomatic relations.” This allowed the United States to make more money, because China would buy a lot of American products. This also isolated the Soviet Union, and subsequently it began negotiating with the United States, with both sides making progress. In the end, the two sides reached an agreement and a "peaceful coexistence known as Détente." In short, increasing trade and establishing peace was the main effect of Nixon's foreign policy. The Munich massacre is also...... middle of paper ...... softer attitude, Gianni Versace and Giorgio Armani, and the scarf was the accessory of the year. Then in 1978, epaulettes, slanted hats and tailored suits were brought back, characters were shown with more skin, and for men suits, jackets and coats and a neckerchief outside the jacket. In conclusion, the people, events, music and fashion of the 1970s have influenced the present. The 1970s were a time of change and growth, it was even a time of sadness. The economy was in bad shape and Elvis Presley died. Additionally, the Beatles' breakup made the period even sadder than before. Well, we all grow and develop, but no matter how much we grow, we will make mistakes and it's up to us to rebuild. Gerald Ford must have tried to solve the previous problems, but he did not solve them all. If we didn't have the 1970s, we wouldn't be where we are today.
