The United Nations peacebuilding architecture: a tool or an obstacle to better coordination?I. IntroductionPeacebuilding is the phenomenon in which a range of international and national actors collaborate within various support structures in order to address the fundamental/root causes of violence, consolidate peace and avoid relapse in conflict in fragile states. With the rise of globalization and increased interdependence between states, economic growth and development have been brought about; However, greater interconnectivity has also created an unstable environment ripe for renewed violence and conflict, particularly in fragile and post-war states. External tensions, such as transnational terrorism, international crime and global economic crises, increase the risk of violence in fragile states and hinder development efforts needed to strengthen weak national institutions. The development of the state and its institutions has become increasingly closely linked to security. Investment in sound development is a crucial element necessary to effectively secure the volatile environment of an interconnected global system; however, lack of development can also create detrimental security risks of vulnerability and renewed violence. With the changing nature of conflict and collective security in the postmodern era, peace operations have begun to shift from a minimalist approach of maintaining the status quo to a complex and multidimensional approach, or peacebuilding. Peacebuilding attempts to integrate development and security efforts in order to effectively address state fragility and achieve lasting peace.
