  • Essay / Several phases of Hamlet by William Shakespeare

The play “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare is a very popular play till date. It shows many different obstacles that a person can go through and how others can act based on that one person. Hamlet goes through many phases such as: sarcasm, suicidal tendencies and procrastination, all because of some information discovered about his father. As he goes through each phase, everyone around him is affected in different ways, from madness to death, this play will always be popular and studied alongside all of Shakespeare's work. Hamlet's use of sarcasm helps us recognize how intelligent he truly is. He uses this technique throughout the piece to truly express what he is feeling and what he is going through. In Act One, Scene Two, Hamlet begins talking to his new father (he is also his uncle) and makes a clever comment under his breath when his new father calls him his son and his cousin: "A little more than kin and less than kind.” (I.ii.67) This being said with the intention of making her understand that he is not only her son but also her nephew/cousin and they both know that is a bit strange. Hamlet makes it clear that he does not like this situation imposed on him. He continues his sarcasm in act two, "for if the sun breeds maggots in a dead dog which is carrion that kisses well..." (II.ii.197-199), he then suggests to Polonius that 'they discuss truthful men, but Polonius does not. I don't know as much as Hamlet. He's more sarcastic with Polonius than anyone else in the room so far. This becomes deeper as Hamlet realizes more and more as time passes and he has time to think. The plan to denounce his father's murder affects him and this is what makes Hamlet more sarcastic. No one but him knows the truth and soon everyone will be in the middle of paper......and no one to speak to or ask for advice, so he handled everything on his own, and it's not generally not the case. It's not going too well. Sooner or later when events like this happen you will need to talk to someone, get a second opinion and you won't end up wallowing in all your emotions and thoughts. In the end, Hamlet got what he wanted but also died. This is all because Claudius killed his brother in the beginning. Without him, no one would have died and this play would have had a completely different concept. Whether or not Hamlet got what he wanted, putting off Claudius' murder until the very last minute had a very big impact on this play and Hamlet's death. If he had done it earlier, everything would have happened differently. In the end, Hamlet went through many phases as a man and ultimately died because of it all..
