  • Essay / My Definition of Success - 920

Always be yourself, express yourself, have confidence in yourself, don't go out and look for a successful personality and replicate it. – Bruce Lee – What is success? Society is still striving for a definition to define what it is and how others can and have succeeded in achieving it. This article will illustrate the definition of success, what makes the company successful or not, and what my personal definition of success is. This will show how twisted and materialistic people can be in today's world. In Dictionary.com's definition, success is the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted. Many people feel they have lived up to this definition. In Alan Ruddock's article he states that "society has been transformed by economic success and is now a much harsher place, full of sinister individualists who measure success by the accumulation of wealth." For example, many believe that Bill Gates is successful because he created Microsoft and is one of the richest people in the world. He also gives a lot of his money away by donating it to many charities that will benefit others. Anyone with that kind of money has billions to give. No one can have so much and not give it away because they already have everything they could want. A school system can also be considered successful based on the number of students who graduate and perform well on the state-issued standardized test. Many suburban schools do very well because of the teachers the city hires to teach their children. In my hometown, we are one of the best school systems in the state of Ohio because we live in a wealthier neighborhood and we also have the money to pay for newer textbooks and others...... middle of paper. ...what matters is your family, your friends and those whose lives you have touched. As you can see, the company definitely needs to be reviewed based on what it considers success. People are becoming more and more greedy. They only care about themselves and don't look at life as a whole. Success should be seen as a journey and not just an end result. Whether it's my own definition or Dictionary.com's, I think we can all benefit from understanding what success really is. Works Cited Fagg, Jonathan.
