  • Essay / The Fatal High School Struggle - 946

As discussed in class, speech is our communication. Additionally, author James Paul Gee of “What is Literacy” defines discourse as an “identity kit” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). Gee includes speech as a combination of a person's thought, action, and language associated with a group of other people. There are different types of speech; the two discourses that will be discussed in this article are primary and secondary. Primary discourse is the “oral mode developed in the primary process of enculturation” (Well, “What is literacy?”). The main discourse of this article is the first-person experience I had in high school. Secondary discourse is “developed in association with, having access to, and practicing with these secondary institutions” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). School, work, and church are examples of secondary institutions. The secondary discourse of the article concerns attending the University of Arkansas and writing this article. According to Gee, “secondary discourse can serve as a meta-discourse to critique primary discourse…” (“What is Literacy?”). Throughout this process, I wanted to know if high school was meant. Was my high school experience horrible or is there a sociological reasoning behind the events? With this, I studied social construction and applied it to my previous experiences, allowing me to truly discover if high school is meant. According to Stanford University, “phenomenology is the study of “phenomena”…[focusing primarily on] the meanings of things. we have in our experience” (Stanford, “Phenomenology”). Throughout this article, I demonstrate the study of phenomenology by searching for meaning in my experiences. In order to gain a better meaning of these past experiences, I acquiesced to the information......in the middle of the article......the ciologists identify relating us all at the end.
