The book I chose to read for the book discussion is called “The Selection”. It is an extremely popular book, selling over three million five hundred thousand copies worldwide. Here is some additional information about the book I read in summary form. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on “Why violent video games should not be banned”? Get the original essay This story takes place in Illéa, located in North America which has 35 provinces, where a competition known as The Selection. The competition features 35 girls, each from a different province. The 35 girls compete to win the heart of Prince Maxon, and the winner of the competition becomes the wife of the beloved prince, and now the queen of Illéa. However, this country is problematic, because of the caste system. The caste system depends on your income as well as your profession. Castes start at 1, being the highest (royalty) and end at 8 (homeless and beggars). Our protagonist; America Singer, a lower caste, whose family is poor and desperate for money, has been selected to participate in the competition. Because of competition, America must leave her family to live in a palace; and abandon Aspen, her boyfriend with whom she has been secretly dating for 2 years. Trembles; who belongs to a lower caste than America, convinces her to enter the competition, thereby sacrificing his love for her (in the hope that she can have a chance at a better life). Due to America's low caste, the king discriminates against her, although Maxon favors her over the other competitors. America is trapped in a seemingly endless love triangle, where her love for Maxon is no greater than her love for Aspen. Moving on, the reasons I love this book are due to the point of view and symbolism. To begin with, this book is narrated by America; in the first person. The quote: “But still, it was mine. I didn’t think I could sacrifice my dreams, no matter how much my family meant to me,” shows that it is told in the first person as it includes the words “mine, me, and my.” I like the way America tells it because of how interesting it is; she is young, naive, stubborn and quite sassy. More; America's way of telling history allows the reader to experience and feel as if they are themselves in the story; that engages our emotions (especially if you are absorbed in books). Next, I'd like to talk about the symbolism of this story. An example of symbolism in this story is the American coin jar. America says, “When I sang, Aspen loved it. From time to time, when he had something, he would give me a penny to pay for my song. Having those pennies was like a reminder of everything Aspen was willing to do for me, everything I meant to him. This jar of coins reminds America of everything Aspen was willing to do for her. When they parted ways, America returned the money to Aspen. However, one of the coins gets stuck in the jar, but America takes the jar with her to the palace. The fact that America takes the pot with her demonstrates how much she can't get over Aspen, who she undoubtedly still has feelings for. Whether it's the point of view or the symbolism of the story, the story is undeniably very interesting. Keep in mind: this is just a sample. Get a personalized article from our expert writers now.
