  • Essay / Conflict between social classes - 1886

Social class, which can define one's position in society, sometimes contributes to a form of conflict for socially inferior people trying to gain rights and equality in society . This was often seen in 20th century history, such as in the movement towards independence in Africa and India, where people rebelled to create their own government and benefit from better living conditions. . The rise of conflict due to social inequality has occurred all over the world, and as a result, social class difference is an integral part of the conflict in many examples of 20th century non-Western literature. The discrimination against the Hazaras and the conflict between them and the Taliban are depicted in The Kite Runner when the Hazaras suffer grave injustice at the hands of the Taliban. Assef is presented as a tyrant in the story, which already evokes the struggle between two different groups. He, being half German and half Pashtun, is characterized as a typical tyrant in the novel. Additionally, his ethnicity symbolizes the power of the Pashtuns since they are the dominant ethnic group in Afghanistan. This means that he has always had the privilege and advantages of living compared to a Hazara like Hassan, a predominant Shia group that is ranked very low in terms of relative ethnic groups and status. Assef asserts that “Afghanistan is the land of the Pashtuns. It has been and always will be. We are the real Afghans, the pure Afghans, not this Flat Nose here. His people pollute our homeland, our watan. They dirty our blood” (40 years old, Hosseini). This signifies his strong belief in the superiority of the Pashtuns in Afghanistan, hence the inequality of the two ethnic groups and the direction of possible conflict between them. Additionally, the ab...... middle of paper ...... groups, and they indicate that conflicts become more serious when they involve two different ethnic groups, as in The Kite Runner and Weep Not, Child. Arguably, social class difference is an integral part of much non-Western literature of the 20th century, as conflicts are strongly illustrated throughout the stories.
