Hip hop dance was important to African American culture because it allowed them to create their own culture, their own music, their own style. Watching Flex is Kings, many young men appear in a video demonstrating what hip hop dance culture has evolved into in the 21st century. This is a contemporary urban dance movement. You can see the emotion and “seriousness” in their movements. Hip hop dancing is these people’s lives” (“Flex Is Kings”). Flex is a type of street dance, sometimes called "breaking bones" because of its movements making a person appear to have no bones or are literally breaking them to create the scary dances that she creates (“Flexing”). African Americans rely on this particular art form to explain how we as a race were able to display our culture to mainstream America. The mainstream is basically a majority of people (Mainstream).
