  • Essay / Generation X and Generation Y - 2066

Generation X is a group of individuals born in the years 1964-1980. This very interesting generation is one that is often forgotten. The reasoning is due to the small size of this group. Back when this group of people was growing up with their parents, baby boomers were free-roaming in the workplace. Layoffs were increasing and the job market was very competitive. This led to one of the nicknames of this generation: “Latchkey Kids” (Zemke 2013). This term was instituted to define what was happening in the home of this generation. Because their parents had to work hard to keep their jobs and have food on the table, children were often given keys so they could come home from school and care for their siblings. This type of parenting was surely not pleasant for either the parent or the child; However, money had to be made. After struggling to concentrate on school, the children would come home from school and help with homework, cooking, cleaning, running errands, or whatever the family needed. This also led to parents missing out on some extracurricular activities their children were participating in and also spending time bonding with their child. Gen Xers are a very independent and strong-willed group of people. Some of the people who grew up in this generation missed out on their childhood because of the responsibility that fell on their shoulders. However, financial flows had to be stable so that the family could keep its head above water. As mentioned previously, layoffs were beginning to increase. Some companies haven't been as successful as they thought they would be. Parents were frustrated and didn't understand why the job market had collapsed... middle of paper ... key children. I can appreciate my senior citizens more because some of them fought in wars for my honor. I can appreciate the people who participated in the civil rights movement, namely the baby boomers. All of these generations bring a certain uniqueness to the world and each should be appreciated for that. Works CitedCoupland, Douglas. (1991). Generation X: Tales for an accelerated culture.
