  • Essay / Hurricane Sandy: Personal Story - 2202

Hurricane Sandy was certainly a very difficult time for everyone in the Northeast region. At first, I didn't realize how hard this was going to hit us, because the year before, Hurricane Irene didn't have as big of an effect on my town. Sure, we didn't leave the house and there were a few trees down, but it didn't affect us like Hurricane Sandy. Even though I wasn't expecting a very violent hurricane, my parents were still preparing for the worst. They asked me to come home and stay even though many of my friends were still on campus. I thought being with my family during this difficult time would make the most sense. When the hurricane initially hit, we didn't lose power, even though many families around us did. My sister and I decided to end our boredom by watching random TV shows, and just when we found something that interested us, the power went out. We hoped it was just a brief power outage and that power would be restored within the hour. We were in for a big surprise. We didn't have hot water or electricity for five days. During those five days, we loaded our laptops and phones into my mom's car and used them until we had to charge them again and again. During this time, we went searching for all of our old DVDs in our basement and brought them all back one by one to watch on the laptop. We listened to the radio from time to time to see if there was any news about the power outage. All this time, I couldn't wait for everything to go back to normal so I could go back to school and start enjoying my life again. It was one afternoon, while my mother and I were in the car listening to the radio, when I realized that we weren't as bad as the others......middle of paper......The first step is to be aware of it, and the rest is easy!
