IntroductionAfter reading Tony Robinson's 2004 book on The Worst Job in History, I decided to choose Plowman Work. As Tony Robinson described it, in the dark ages of British history, to plow meant to live, otherwise it would be impossible to live. With this notion, I assumed that being a plowman must have been one of the common occupations in the Dark Ages. In the Dark Ages, the plowman seems to contribute a lot in terms of food resources. It has been described in detail that if a crop fails to produce, it is because of insufficient work done by the plowman and a decrease in the amount of fields plowed. And that leads to an even bigger problem: food shortages. Food shortage or starvation was so widely used at the time that a father would willingly sell his son into slavery as long as he had enough income in return. As Robinson (2004) says in his book, it is sad to recognize that “hunger was a reality”, p. 22. A plowman's work meant so much that if it was not done in sufficient quantity, it would cause those who are called starved. In 7th-century Sussex, the Saxon historian and monk Bede indicated that the famine was that of a group of around 40 to 50 emaciated and starving people who came together in a pact to commit suicide together. They joined hands and jumped to the seashore to die by falling or drowning. How can so many people come together to end their lives? The scarcity of food sources has led to unimaginable crime. This shows the importance of the job called a plowman and the impact a plowman has on society in the dark times. Like any other job, a plowman's job begins at dawn.
