    Texting while driving is a growing national trend and is quickly becoming one of the nation's leading causes of death. Most drivers think they can text and drive and still stay safe on the roads; However, the numbers don’t lie! According to the National Safety Council, 1,600,000 accidents per year are caused by someone texting and driving. The laws and penalties for this act are too lax and harsher laws should be enforced. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Fatality states that texting while driving causes nearly eleven teen deaths each day and 330,000 injuries annually. Nearly 25 percent of all car accidents involve someone texting while driving; this represents 1.3 million accidents. Texting while driving is the number one distraction for the majority of drivers. Five seconds is the minimum amount of time a driver's attention is diverted from the road when using a cell phone. That being said, if you're going 55 mph, five seconds is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field without paying attention to the road.....
