  • Essay / Analysis Money No Enough - 638

After watching Singapore Dreaming, Money No Enough and My Magic, I identified 5 “Singaporean” values. These include filial piety, eternal love, friendship, determination and education. The first value is filial piety. The act of filial piety was depicted in Hui's Money No Enough, performed by Henry Thia. Hui is single and lives with his mother. Additionally, he has three older sisters. Hui's mother fainted during the opening ceremony of her car polishing business. She was later diagnosed with leukemia and has to stay in hospital for treatment. Due to the high hospitalization costs, the three sisters were not willing to shell out a large amount of money, even though they are richer and better off. The reason they gave was absurd, saying that since she was young, their mother loves Hui the most and therefore he should be the one to pay all the hospital costs. They also claimed that they were already married and had families of their own. Therefore, Hui should be solely responsible for taking care of the aging mother. Hui tried to get financial aid, but was repeatedly turned down because her sisters are rich. Although he felt it was unfair to pay all the hospital costs, he did not complain much and continued to visit his mother in the hospital whenever he could until his death. He also managed to pay all of his mother's hospital bills and eventually organized his mother's wake. The second value is eternal love. The act of undying love was shown in all three films. In Singapore Dreaming, Siew Luan gave money to his son just before his job interview because he doesn't have a job yet and this money can help him for a while. Moreover, Poh Huat volunteered to pay for his son's wedding, no matter how much... middle of paper ... is to make money and give his son a better life. Before his death, he left a few thousand dollars in cash to his son. The fifth value is the importance of education in the eyes of employers. In Singapore Dreaming, Seng mentioned that he graduated from Dubois Polytechnic University in Idaho, USA. However, the institution is not recognized in Singapore and the company ultimately decided not to hire him. In Money No Enough, Keong was unable to get promoted despite being an experienced worker because he has a low level of English. His boss hired a new graduate as manager because he is younger and well educated. Keong has decided to quit his job and hopes to find another job. He failed because he only has a GCE O Level certificate while other people fighting for the same job as him have a diploma or masters..
