  • Essay / An Analysis of The Well Crafted Sentence by Brian Doyle

In his book, Bacon talks about EB White who “strongly warns against writing that calls attention to itself” (Bacon 9). But she thinks otherwise. She believes that “the best writers also seek pleasure, perhaps for themselves when they write and certainly for us when we read” (10). The search for pleasure in writing can take several forms. At Boston University, Doyle read several stories, all true, that he felt pleasure and connection with. For Doyle, a story shows much more than what we see. A story should make you feel a connection. In “Joyas Volardores,” Doyle writes with great emotion: “So many things kept in a heart during a lifetime. So many things kept in a heart in a day, an hour, a moment” (Doyle). From his guest lecture at Boston University, we can conclude that Doyle likes to write with the aim of telling an enjoyable story.
