Japan and Sweden have rather long life expectancy rates in their countries. Life expectancy in Japan in 2013 was 84.19 years and in Sweden 81.28 years. Life expectancy in the United States was 78.62 years. (CIA.gov, 2014) Why does it take so long in Japan and Sweden? Better health care, healthier lifestyles and lifestyles are part of the reason why. The Japanese eat healthier than Americans. Fish is the meat of choice in Japan. Fish contains less cholesterol than red meat, which tends to be the top choice in the United States. Japanese people tend to eat less dairy products than Americans. Milk contains a high number of calories and fat. Rice is a common staple food in Japan. It is hearty and low in fat. Americans use rice, but potatoes and pasta are also common staple foods in the United States. The Japanese eat a lot of soy, which is tofu and sprouts.
