  • Essay / There's More to Life Than High School - 764

Being in my Counseling 110 class taught me that there is more to my life than high school. I learned that I had to separate myself from my high school and that I had to learn to be a more independent person and drive my own life. According to Eric Hoffer on page 14 of On Course, “In a time of radical change, it is the learners who inherit the future.” I have learned that to succeed in my own life, I need discipline, responsibility and motivation. in order to survive in real life. The first thing I must apply to my life is self-discipline. I need this in my life because without it I would not want to complete any difficult task and take on direct tasks. An example is that during my first two semesters here at Palomar College, I always want to relax by being on the computer, XBOX, and spending time with my friends instead of doing the most important thing, my homework. Self-discipline is defined as the act of disciplining or the power to discipline one's own feelings and desires for the purpose of self-improvement. In chapter four, Henery David Thoreau says that “it is not enough to be busy…the question is: what are we busy with? In order to be successful in self-discipline, I need perseverance to complete college to obtain a degree so that I can become either a nurse or a special education teacher. One way to do this is to not settle for just one way of doing things, because if you fail, there are always other ways to accomplish that task. During my senior year of high school, I decided I wanted to join the cross country team. After the second week of practice, I pulled my hamstring and couldn't continue practicing and couldn't go to the doctor. I really wanted to stay in the middle of paper......what a goal when I'm stuck in college trying to pass my classes. Charles J. Givens states in chapter three that, from his own experience, there is no doubt that the speed with which you are able to achieve your goals is directly related to the clarity and frequency with which you are able to visualize your goals. I discovered my dream a few years ago of becoming a nurse while watching "Tramam: Life in the ER", a television show that follows doctors in different hospitals as they care for patients who enter or present themselves. by ambulance. I see myself reaching my goal in a few years and I will have the opportunity to achieve my goal of becoming a nurse. My Counseling 110 taught me to look forward in my life and find the goals I want to achieve through separation. myself since my high school and to try to move forward and achieve my goals.
