Some might go further and say that belief in this view would be an example of sexism. Both arguments would be correct to some extent. These norms define children when they cover aspects of their perceived gender roles from the beginning. Calling this a sexist view would also be incorrect because mothers and fathers follow the rules of this society. It is true that men and women are equal, but the standards considered for them still exist to a certain extent. Even with these norms surrounding the world and its children, there are still parents who defy them and let their children express themselves as they please (Preston). There are even early signs of “gender conversion” or “simple blurring of the difference between the sexes” in some children. But most children and adolescents will end up continuing on the same path that was taught to them during their childhood by their parents, despite any changes that might have been made to them internally. This shows that our gender norms and the different ways parents teach us are widely accepted and sometimes unknowingly followed throughout our lives.
