Essay / Senator Profile: Dianne Fienstein - 891
SENATOR PROFILE – DIANNE FEINSTEINDianne Feinstein, the oldest U.S. Senator from California, was born in San Francisco, California on June 22, 1933. She became Mayor of San Francisco when she was the mayor-elect of San Francisco was shot and killed in 1978. Although she lost the governorship of California in 1990, she became the first woman elected U.S. senator from California in 1992. Feinstein is a senator for 21 years (since 1992). She is a member of the Legislative Committee on Appropriations, Judiciary, Rules, and Administration, and she is chair of the Select Committee on Intelligence. During her first term as senator, she co-authored the Gun Free Schools Act and the Hate Crimes Sentencing Enhancement Act in 1994. She also spearheaded legislation banning the sale and possession of military-style assault weapons . Feinstein strongly supports the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, which she has rated as a special interest group 100 percent for 20 years. Planned Parenthood Action Fund engages in educational and electoral activities such as legislative advocacy and voter education. She does not support the Christian Coalition of America, an organization that represents some views of a number of Christians in America. She supports the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), an organization that ensures equal political, social, educational, and economic rights for all people and attempts to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination . She slightly supports the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) with an average approval rating of 65 percent. The ACLU is an organization that preserves individual rights, which include First Amendment rights, equal protection under the law, to middle of paper......and bill. For the fourth hypothetical bill, Feinstein would vote no. In her statement in the Supreme Court's decision to review same-sex marriage cases, she forcefully points out that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has denied more than 1,100 same-sex couples the rights and benefits enjoyed by other American citizens. Thus, she expressed that this was an equal protection violation. Additionally, Feinstein expressed hope that the Supreme Court will uphold the decision and restore marriage equality in California. In my opinion, Dianne Feinstein is a very liberal Senate Democrat as she strongly supports bills banning the sale of firearms and military assault rifles. Additionally, she is very liberal in her views on abortion rights and the rights of same-sex couples. She pays great attention to minorities like abused women around the world, African Americans, American workers and gay couples..
