Essay / Social Issues Reflecting the Deaf Community
Hearing people often tried to teach deaf people to speak, or tried to separate the deaf community. One of the greatest leaders in favor of Deaf separation was Alexander Graham Bell. It separated deaf people from each other and created alienation among deaf people. Additionally, the Deaf community was often stereotyped on television, and once television had sound, they were increasingly discriminated against. Although much of the discrimination was between the hearing and the deaf community, segregation and discrimination also occurred within the deaf community. A deaf black couple attempted to attend an NAD meeting and were met with contempt and prejudice. After that, the NAD banned black people from membership for 40 years. Additionally, the deaf community allegedly discriminates against deaf people, especially well-known figures who choose to speak rather than speak.
