  • Essay / Child Support Positive and Negative Influence on Families

Child support is a regular payment to a child whose parents or legal guardians are separated by divorce or relationship. The person who usually pays child support is usually the father. It is very likely that the court or the couple in general has agreed that the mother will care for the child and the father will always be present, but the child will not reside with him unless the court directs otherwise. The person who lives with the other parent usually pays child support. In some cases this may not be true, but in most cases it is. The higher-income parent generally plays a role in determining child support. Most child support payment plans are established in court and agreed to by both parents. In some cases, you do not need to go to court to sort out a child support payment plan. Child support is not paid on time. The law carries serious consequences if payment is not respected. Today I am going to compare two different states and their child support laws and regulations. First, in Illinois, the number of children you have with the person you are separating from will play a role in determining the payment plan. According to childsupportillinois.com, if you have one child you must pay twenty percent of your net income and if you have two children you must pay twenty-eight percent of your net income. Net income in the state of Illinois includes all of your income except your deductions. Your deductions would include Social Security, union dues, state and federal income taxes (“Child Support Services Frequently Asked Questions,” 2014). Also in Illinois, parents may have to cover other expenses such as health care, education, extracurricular activities...... middle of paper...... In New York , they look at gross income and their deductions would be the Yonkers tax and Medicare. The percentages also varied differently in each state. Child support can influence families in both negative and positive ways. A positive aspect is that the child no longer needs to see his parents arguing since they are separated. But their negative effect is that parents may find it difficult to talk to the child about each other and this is probably due to child support. How a parent didn't pay on time or give enough money. I know this very well because my little nephew's parents are divorced and I see my cousin talking about her ex-spouse in a negative way and most of the time it is because of child support. It's great that our nation truly cares about its children and is very strict about laws and regulations regarding child support..
