  • Essay / An Analysis of Tennyson's The Princess - 859

An Analysis of Tennyson's The PrincessAlfred, Lord Tennyson is the most influential poet of the Victorian era. He was named Poet Laureate of England by the Queen and the first poet to receive the title of Lord. During his life, Tennyson produced many works considered great. Such is The Princess which is a long narrative poem with a number of songs. One such song is “Tears, Idle Tears,” a poem full of heartbreak and sorrow. In this fragment from The Princess, the speaker is in despair over the death of his love. This gives the poem a sad tone that is typical of Tennyson and his works. I chose to analyze this poem because it speaks to something that many people have experienced, even me. he or she remembers a deceased person. There is another reason for choosing this particular work of Tennyson: it is the figurative language and the way the poem sounds. The use of alliteration, imagery, metaphors and the oxymoronic statement at the end makes the poem more philosophical and thoughtful. Grief is something everyone has felt. One of the causes of sadness are memories that remind us of something that has passed or ended. The poem “Tears, Idle Tears” has the same subject. It speaks of loss and nostalgia. There are special feelings in this poem that do not appear in many other works. These facts make the poem different from the others; that's one of the main reasons why I love it. The speaker of the poem begins with a statement about tears and where they come from. After that, he gives the reason for his tears. According to the poem, sorrow is caused by "the middle of paper...and reminds the reader of sadness and despair." However, it is not just the figurative language that makes the poem so good. The perfect use of language is combined with thinking and philosophy that correspond to those of the author. He said it is better to have loved and lost than not to love at all. The same thing happens in the poem, the speaker is full of sorrow but he knows that those memories that make him sad are also sweet because there was joy before death. All these things make the poem one of the best representatives of the Victorian era. and of Tennyson himself. This work best presents the feelings people experience when they have lost a friend and that is the main reason why I chose it. In my opinion, this poem is relevant even today, when people are increasingly interested in the material rather than the spiritual..
