Al Gore was the first son of Albert Gore Sr.. He had an older sister, Nancy, who was ten years older than Al, but unfortunately she died in 1984 from lung cancer. Politics was a family affair, and Al's father was a U.S. Senator from the state of Tennessee. Al's mother's name was Pauline, and she was a graduate of Vanderbilt Law School. When Al was in school, they lived at the Fairfax Hotel in Washington DC. However, during the summer he lived on the family farm in Carthage, Tennessee. He spent the majority of his days helping on the farm, then spent most of his nights hunting. Al was a brilliant student from the start. He attended an all-boys private school named St. Albans Episcopal School. The school was in Washington DC and he played basketball and football for the school. In 1965, Gore enrolled at Harvard University. Initially, he planned to major in English, but it soon became clear that he was interested in politics.
