  • Essay / Coastal Erosion: La Playa Loca - 1114

Erosion occurs when elements such as wind, water and ice remove pieces of land. ("What is coastal erosion?") Coastal erosion occurs when destructive waves erode parts of the coast. This occurs in four ways: corrosion/abrasion, hydraulic action, attrition, and corrosion/solution. (“Internet Geography”) Corrosion/abrasion occurs when materials are thrown at the base of cliffs through waves. Hydraulic action occurs when waves strike the base of a cliff and the air is compacted, when the wave leaves the air is forced out, often causing the material to break. Attrition occurs when waves cause rocks and pebbles to crush and eventually break into pieces. Finally, corrosion/solution occurs when certain types of cliffs erode due to acids in the sea. ("Internet Geography") Coastal erosion is the natural process of permanently removing land from a location to install them elsewhere. ("What is Coastal Erosion?") Coastal erosion is an abundant and important topic because it can change people's environments in negative ways. I would like to address the issues surrounding coastal erosion. Not all coastlines erode because coastal land and sediments are constantly changing. Waves that move sand on the coast can sometimes erode sand in one location while washing it onto another beach. This beach would not directly experience erosion, so not all coastlines are eroding. ("Coasts in Crisis") This way, geologists can determine whether a beach is actually eroding by taking into account the mass of the beach. When erosion occurs, it is clear that the beach becomes smaller and smaller due to the sand being washed away and never being replenished.
