  • Essay / The Advantages and Disadvantages of Cloning - 703

Over 100 years ago, cloning was introduced and, over the years, has been questioned, analyzed and experimented with. This subject has aroused the revolt of certain people in the face of this controversial advance. To begin with, cloning is “a cellular product or organism genetically identical to the unit or individual from which it originated” (“Cloning”). It is simply “duplicating or closely resembling another in appearance, function and performance” (“Cloning”). I didn't know that there were different types of artificial cloning, including "reproductive cloning, DNA cloning and therapeutic cloning" ("gene therapy"). I didn't know that the first genetically identical mice were split in 1979, according to the National Human Genome Research Institute ("1998 version"). From cloning, this ultimately opened the doors to therapeutic and stem cell research. As controversial as it is, the health benefits of cloning outweigh the harms. “With many types of cloning in gene cloning, it produces copies of genes or segments of DNA” (“Cloning Fact Sheet”). In reproductive cloning, it produces a duplicate of whole animals. In any cloning process, it is always an artificial process. First, I didn't know that in animal cloning it was specifically reproductive cloning in which researchers take a mature somatic cell like a skin cell or a cell from the animal's udder. “They then transfer the DNA from the donor animal's somatic cells into an egg cell or oocyte from which the nucleus containing its own DNA is removed. With other animals, the main experiment conducted to clone is to divide embryos in test tubes. Then, they implant the results into embryos in the adult animal's uterus” (“Cloning Fact Sheet”). For many years, the controversy over human cloning still seems...... middle of paper ......tionship The relationship between stem cells and cancer cells needs to be better understood if stem cells are to be used to treat human diseases (“Cloning Fact Sheet”). There can be a huge advantage in using cloning. Above all, this can be a great advantage for maintaining biodiversity. “This cloning can be an important tool for overthrowing and creating endangered species” (“Organ Cloning”). “An advantage of cloning related to stem cell research is the cloning of healthy human cells, because as humans continue to reproduce, this can lead to increased damage to DNA lineages. This can cause mutations and faulty genes, but these could eliminate healthy human cells. A person with cells can recover more quickly from a traumatic injury” (“Pros and Cons”). This can be considered a medical and scientific advance in biology. The cons and pros are evenly distributed in my opinion.
