In fact, this was taught to all children in Sparta, whether male or female. Spartan women also regularly drank wine with every meal, unlike their Athenian sisters. Sparta's culture and society were looked down upon by neighboring Greek city-states for their non-traditional customs and laws. But by not copying other city-states, Lycurgus' decision to follow an opposite path "made his country extremely fortunate." Sparta was one of the few Greek states where women received formal and physical education. The women of Sparta were treated very differently from other Greek women, but this only explains why Spartan women had much more freedom than others...
