    At the beginning of the story, we see her wanting to go to the lottery. She laughed, joked and encouraged her husband to go upstairs and draw a picture even though he didn't move right away. She never would have suspected that her family would be chosen, and moreover, herself. Jackson creates a great contrast between Tessie's nonchalance and the nervousness of the crowd (Yarmove). When his family is chosen, his character changes knowing there is the possibility of his own death. Tessie's character change is shocking, but consistent with the Holocaust. She symbolizes the human instinct for survival and attempts to sacrifice her own children and their families to reduce her risk of death. In his analysis of Jackson's work, Yarmove writes, "It is the last sullen complaint of a hypocrite raised by her own petard" to drive this point home. The Nazis involved in rounding up the "little" people, as well as all those who helped, did so because they were naive enough to believe that they themselves would not be killed, or because they believed in the cause.
