The idea of using the blood of a living creature (usually that of an animal) in order to erase immorality, or better known as sin, dates back to the roots of primitive civilization. Specifically in Judaism, the ritual began in which an animal was sacrificed in order to cover the sins of one or more people. Currently observing the traditions of Judaism, we find no signs of animal sacrifice, with the exception of Orthodox Jews. On the other hand, fundamentalist Latter-day Saints (FLDS) today zealously observe blood atonement in their practices. The meaning and importance given to atonement by blood, through the sacrifice of animals, no longer has the same effect in the traditions of Judaism due to the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, but atonement by Blood is still highly regarded by the FLDS, as they believe the belief that the blood shed by Jesus on the cross is not sufficient for serious sins such as murder or adultery. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss the main differences in the belief in blood atonement between Jews and fundamentalist Mormons and how beliefs in blood atonement have evolved over the past few centuries in both religions and how, in turn, shaped the vision of both. religions.
