Essay / The Death of a Future Like Ours - Abortion - 939
With the increasing number of teenage pregnancies these days, there is no doubt that abortion is one of the most controversial issues since the 16th century. Abortion is mentioned in records as early as the 11th century, but it became public in the late 1800s. In Canada, there are currently no legal restrictions on abortion since it was decriminalized on January 28 1988. However, debates about whether abortion is morally acceptable or not are still ongoing in different parts of the country. Pro-choice (pro-abortion) people insist that fetuses are not included in the “right to life” principle, and that abortion is therefore permitted. They base their argument on the principle of personhood whereby they define a "person" as someone who is rational, autonomous, has self-awareness, etc. On the other hand, pro-lifers (anti-abortion) argue vice versa and push the principle that fetuses are "biologically human", therefore they deserve the right to live. Different angles of argument have been considered but all end in an impasse. Marquis, for his part, offers a solution that could solve the problem once and for all. According to Don Marquis, “abortion is presumed to be a very serious wrong, where the presumption is very strong – as strong as the presumption that killing another adult human being is wrong. wrong” (Marquis, p. 371). In his book Why is abortion immoral? , he argues that the main reason why it is morally wrong to kill an adult human is neither the effect on the killer nor on the people left behind by the victim, but because killing him deprives him of his future value. All activities, projects, experiences and pleasures that he might have in the future are taken away from him (Marquis, p. 367). Therefore, killing anyone who has a “future…… middle of paper…… whatever they want to do with their body. All people experience different types of misfortune throughout their lives. However, one may lose something special, but one can still function as a human without it. He may lose someone very close to him, but he can still move forward and succeed in life. But when he loses his life, it's the end. The loss of life is almost the greatest misfortune that can happen to a person (Marquis, p. 370). Abortion not only kills a person's life, but also their future and the potential value of what they can do. Therefore, abortion is, except in rare cases, morally wrong. quotes/a/margaret_sanger.htmhttp://forlifeandfamily.blogspot.ca/2009/08/they-know-its-baby-and-they-dont-want.html
