Essay / Duality In Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde - 592
Edward Hyde, the Doctor drinks a serum he created in order to free himself from his “evil” side. If, for example, you give a child a gun and a promise of no consequences, the child will harm anyone and anything he sees. This is essentially what Dr. Hyde did when he freed his shrunken counterpart, Mr. Hyde. What he does on his free nights is never detailed and can only be assumed. "...(I) bid a resolute farewell to freedom, to relative youth... to the bounding impulses and secret pleasures which I had enjoyed under the disguise of Hyde." (75). These secret pleasures are mentioned by all the main characters, who are middle-aged single people. In fact, the number of female characters is extremely small, and most are only mentioned for a page or two before never being mentioned again. Homosexual tendencies could be inferred in men, which, shamefully, was practically illegal at the time.
