Essay / Baseball & Softball - 1312
Spring is full of transformations and changes. Flowers bloom, temperatures rise, and allergy sufferers begin a long journey of pain and agony. The start of spring also brings the start of baseball and softball. By carefully analyzing two representative teams from each sport at the University of Arizona, a sociological analysis based on the similarities and differences between the sports was performed. Despite the relative similarities between the two sports, a number of differences have also been identified, showing that the two sports are interconnected with cultural aspects and elements that cannot be immediately observed on the surface. I was a student-athlete at the University of Arizona for two years. During this short time, I attended many sporting events on campus. I often wear the colors red, white and blue for almost every men's sport that exists in Arizona, ranging from men's basketball to men's swimming. However, I never attended a women’s softball game in college. In fact, it's important to know that I've never been to a women's softball game before. I had seen a lot of baseball games in my life, but never a softball game. Everything changed on Friday April 4. As soon as I finished soccer practice, a few teammates and I headed to the softball field. That night, Arizona faced the Stanford Cardinal. When we arrived, a Stanford player was at the plate and an Arizona pitcher was preparing to throw a pitch. As I sat and observed my surroundings, something became evidently unconscious to me. Unlike baseball, the pitcher was not on a mound, but rather appeared to be in a flat circle. It was interesting and I wondered why there wasn't a mound. Was it...... middle of paper......o have a bigger fan base. Yet the Arizona women's softball team has arguably been more successful than the Arizona baseball team, historically, with 8 national championships to 4 baseball teams. The reason for the difference in the number of fans is therefore still a question that will be pondered for many years to come. Truly, attending both events allowed me to evaluate and analyze the similarities and differences between the two sports. Recognizing that the two sports are culturally different despite being very identical to each other was pretty mind-blowing. The social influence that sport seems to have on players and fans also seems to have a positive outlook. It will be interesting to see how each sport progresses in the future in terms of the types of fans that come to games, how teams interact with fans, and the overall atmosphere of games..
