  • Essay / Deviance/Social Change in “The Philadelphia Story”

While watching “The Philadelphia Story,” there have been many occasions where deviant behavior can be observed from the characters. Each character's actions are influenced and labeled by the theories in one way or another, regardless of the deviant act. Different theories have been used to characterize certain deviant acts in different ways depending on the deviant act they committed. The three examples that seemed very notable to me in deviant social theories were: Dexter's unexpected return and his actions for Traci's wedding, Traci's behavior the night before the wedding and with Dexter, and Macaulay's actions the night before Traci's wedding and snooping around her family. I believe that Dexter and Macaulay Connor's behavior can be linked to Anomie theory, and that Traci's behavior can be linked to Labeling theory. Each theory goes hand in hand with the deviant act committed by the person. The theories of Anomie and Labeling are used in different ways by each character's actions. Dexter Haven's unexpected return to his ex-wife's house would be entirely comparable to the theory of Anomie. As Jack Levin puts it, “a social situation in which the traditional rules of daily life have broken down and individuals have become confused about how to behave.” (Levin, 54) I think this is very visible in Dexter's behavior when he returns to Traci's house to try to present Macaulay Connor and Liz Imbrie as family friends so that they can account for the wedding for their tabloid Spy Magazine. Dexter became confused about himself when he learned of Traci's marriage. He was a former employee of Spy, and that's when he decided to interfere in the marriage with his plot. "Dexter finds himself in a position where he is a... middle of paper...... the press trying to get involved in the marriage. Lying is still bad today because it breaks the bonds and trust that can easily be destroyed by lies For messing with Traci while she is engaged, it appears they slept together after drinking the night before her wedding. This act would be highly looked down upon by both the man and her. woman This would be looked down upon, because even if they did something or not, society would think what they want, and that could be the worst thing. This type of deviant acts is the one that would have been looked down upon the most. society seventy years ago, and even seventy years later Society will judge what it wants as it wishes because it believes that it can do so since it is part of its society. People should be judged by their actions and what they can do with them, instead of being judged by what they want to see in society..
