Essay / Fear of the Scarlet Witch - 732
“There were four. There were four,” Tituba said before accusing many women of witchcraft and dealing with the devil; many innocent women. "I have here in my hand a list of 205, a list of names who have been brought to the attention of the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping policy at the Department of State,” were the words of Senator McCarthy before he accused hundreds of innocent government employees and a few not so innocent ones of being communist spies. The Crucible written in the early 1950s, during the reign of Senator Joseph McCarthy, strongly reflects the anti-communist movement that existed at the time, led by Joseph McCarthy. The events and characters in Miller's play reveal the dramatic, anxious, and hysterical actions and allegations that accompanied The Red Scare. A parallel between McCarthy's world and The Crucible is how people reacted to thoughts of witches or communists infiltrating their societies and how this caused hysteria throughout the cities. In Salem, confessing and abandoning other "witches" was a way out of the stranglehold, but it was also a way to increase rumors about witches in Salem. Tituba was forgiven because she confessed to dealing with the devil and abandoning Goody Osborne and Sarah Good. Then Goody Osborne and Sarah Good were known to be witches, proving that witches had come to Salem and sowing doubt about the innocence and purity of others. Many other people in the city gave false confessions and countless names when they were found guilty. This was seen as a way to escape punishment, with the majority of confessions being lies just to escape a noose. As with the alleged witches of Salem, the suspected communists were encouraged to confess the truth in court, thus providing the court with evidence to charge Mary Warren as a witch as well. Not only were there events that featured McCarthy in The Crucible, but also specific characters. The best example is that of Sarah Bishop, who had previously been accused of witchcraft in another town and whose reputation was permanently tarnished due to this earlier accusation. This made her an easy target for the town, a woman already with a reputation as a witch, who will not admit to witchcraft and for whom no one will vouch. It was easier to believe that this woman dabbled in witchcraft if she had. I was suspected of this before. McCarthy's Sarah Bishop is a couple put in the electric chair. The Rosenbergs were suspected of selling nuclear secrets to the Russians the year before, making people believe that this couple had been caught selling secrets again was an easy task..
