Essay / Power Distance Test - 706
Australia is culturally Western and therefore can be expected to score low on the Power Distance Index. According to Hofstede data, Australia has a power distance index of 36 percent. Pakistan, on the other hand, scores 55 percent (Hofstede Center). Essentially, Pakistan has a higher power distance index. Australian culture in this regard is more egalitarian in that people working in a workplace expect to relate to each other on an equal basis, regardless of their position. Cooperation increases when employees see each other as equals (Appadurai, 1996 p.67). A young Australian employee can easily access his superior, but this is not the case in Pakistan. In Pakistan, people recognize a person based on their position, making it difficult for younger employees to establish relationships with their seniors.
