As a BSW prepared social worker, I can help combat the problem of homelessness in my community. To do this, I need to do several things before putting anything into action. The first thing after graduating and getting a job would be to get permission to start looking into creating a homeless program. The next thing I need to do is talk with the different agencies in my community. I need to see exactly what they have to offer the homeless as I don't want to duplicate services. After doing this, the most important thing I need to do is talk to homeless people about what they really want in order to effectively meet their needs. After doing these few things, I need to create a committee made up of various people from different agencies so that this becomes a community effort to help solve the homeless problem. Once the committee is formed, we can develop an action plan. Part of the action plan would be to apply for government grants, talk to the city council about creating a homeless shelter and find others in the community who would be willing to donate their time. In the meantime, we can give homeless people the basic necessities they need, such as clean socks and shoes, appropriate clothing, toiletries and blankets/sleeping bags, etc. Another part of the plan would be to connect them to mental health services, health clinics. /health and employment insurance
