Essay / Madness and Madness in Shakespeare's Hamlet - Hamlet...
Hamlet is truly saneIn William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, we meet an interesting character named Hamlet. His father is killed and he discovers that it was his uncle who murdered him. This, among other events, would drive Hamlet mad. But he's not crazy, he's just playing a role because he needs attention and he's actually quite sane. There are small incidents that tell the truth about his state of mind. He plans ahead, before doing anything important. He acts calmly and rationally (most of the time) when planning, and when executing that plan he acts irrationally. Everything he does is done for a viable reason; there is a purpose to what he does and why he does it. Additionally, Hamlet is aware of what is happening around him, which someone crazy would not see. Hamlet plans ahead before carrying out certain tasks. When the company of actors arrives, Hamlet talks to himself discussing that the play will bring awareness to the killer. He thinks of a play in which a man is killed by a relative, which is similar to the murder of Hamlet's father. This was not done in a state of madness, and it was not a spontaneous idea. Hamlet thought about this and planned it in advance. Fools don't think about planning ahead and don't act rationally. When Hamlet acts irrationally, it is in front of people; it's as if Hamlet wants the world to think he's crazy. But maybe the reason he's acting crazy is legit. Many of Hamlet's actions are done for a viable reason. He's not going off to commit random acts of violence or anything like that. When Hamlet was going to kill Claudius for the first time, he stopped, because Claudius was in confession. If Hamlet had killed him there, all of Cladius's sins would have been wiped away, and Hamlet feared sending him to heaven, so he would wait for a better time to kill Claudius. When Hamlet was arguing with his mother and Polonius approaches, Hamlet assumes it was the king. They fight and Hamlet stabs Polonius. Hamlet thought it was the king, a viable reason, but that is not true. The most important reason to prove Hamlet's sanity is that he is aware of what is happening around him..
