  • Essay / Dead Poet's Society - 781

You're on stage in front of the whole class, tense and nervous, eyes closed so unbreakably there are shapes imprinted in the darkness. Whatever comes to mind, you quickly blurt out in search of what to say next. By traveling the path of literature, we lose ourselves in the world of poetry. Where are you going next? Dead Poets Society directed by Peter Weir is a film that teaches teenagers to take control of their lives and live it while they can. This school story teaches a valuable lesson to a group of boys who are struggling to plan for their futures. All this is changed by a unique teacher with an interactive teaching method. Todd is pressured to meet his older brother's high standards and is unsure of what he is capable of until he steps out of his comfort zone. Todd almost changed his character throughout the film. The choices he makes are all caused by something that made him do them. The choices Todd makes are mostly about him blocking everything. He is not sure of himself and does not want to expose himself for fear of making a mistake. His first major decision is not to speak at meetings. He just wants to watch and listen. But he hasn't had many lessons with Mr. Keating yet, so he doesn't know that it's okay to get it wrong and that there is no such thing as writing or wrong answers in poetry. There are an infinite number of answers. ***** He also chose to get on stage in front of the class and tell them everything that was on his mind about poetry. He has the choice to not accept Mr. Keating's way of teaching, but in a way it is very intriguing because we don't know what he has planned. The major turning point for Todd was when he decided to stand up on the desk and defend Mr. Ke...... in the middle of a paper...... to show off in class. Todd finally comes out of his shell and decides to take risks. It forces him out of his comfort zone and shows him how he should live his life. The main goal is that he and Todd must break away from everything that was holding him back and start embracing life by living each day like it's their last. However, by the end of the film, Todd finally found his true voice and realized he could be anyone he wanted. He learns to express himself when it really matters. He is the first student to stand up on Mr. Keating's desk. The other students follow his example towards him. The question has finally been answered. Where do we go when we are lost in the world of poetry? You continue. The path of life as well as that of poetry are incessant. Works Cited www.antiromantic.com www.dailyscript.com
