Many school districts have responded to NCLB by reducing time spent on recess, creative arts, and even physical education in order to focus more on reading and math. This change may have negative implications for children's ability to store new information because children's cognitive capacity is expanded by a significant and clear change in activity. A simple change in lesson topic or academic teaching style does not bring the net change in activity or physical release that children need. Another reason children have less time for free play and exploration is because they are pressured to adapt to adult roles at a younger age. It is very strategically marketed to parents that the best parents give their child "every opportunity" to excel by purchasing a plethora of enrichment tools and enrolling them in a wide variety of opportunities. The idea is that specialized toys, books, computer programs and enrichment videos will ensure that children are sufficiently stimulated for excellent development. As a result, a lot of family time and money is spent on these tools that have been marketed as the best for children. It's actually true
