  • Essay / Dual Characters in Shakespeare's Othello

Dual Characters in OthelloIn Shakespeare's play Othello, I noticed that a few characters in the play are dual because they act in one way when encountered with another person and act differently when the other person is not there. A cheating person is someone who may act like a friend in front of you, but when not with that person, they tend to talk behind their back and don't act like a friend. Deceptive people are fake because you never really know if they are your real friends because friends don't act like that when you're not around them. I don't think there should be deceitful people in the world because they are hurtful people. Now that you know what a deceitful person is, it is obvious that a few characters in this play fall into this category. Iago is a very deceitful person. He is a villain and Othello's elder. Iago seems to be everyone's friend, but all he wants to do is hurt and destroy people's lives. Iago uses Cassio and Roderigo to help him destroy Othello. From the beginning, Iago dislikes Othello because he gave Cassio the position of lieutenant in his place. In Act 1, Scene 1, lines 10-27, simply indicate how much he dislikes Othello because of what he has done. Since Roderigo also doesn't love Othello because he ran away with Desdemona his lover, Iago will use Roderigo to help him get back to Othello. Iago wants to inform Brabantio, Desdemona's father, of what his daughter has done and he asks Roderigo to help him. Iago says "Call his father. Wake him, do after him, poison his delights, proclaim him in the streets; praise his parents, and although he dwells in a fertile climate, smite him with flies. Although his joy be joy, but throw in such changes of vexation that they might lose their color (Act 1, scene 1, lines 61-75) Iago uses Roderigo's hatred of Othello to help him inform Brabantio of. what happens between his daughter and Othello, thus causing him to be upset and do something to Othello Another thing Iago does to Roderigo is to make it seem like he was the only one who informed Brabantio of this. what happens so Iago won't get in trouble, but Roderigo will..
