  • Essay / Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury - 587

Fahrenheit 451Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury is a novel about the descent into super-individualism through mass government brainwashing. The book begins as the main character, Guy Montag, burns down a house for hiding contraband literature. He describes the pleasure he derives from this act of senseless destruction. After this job, an eccentric neighbor who doesn't fit into the status quo confronts him. She begins to ask him questions that force him to think about things he previously took for granted. The story progresses as this girl continually influences him until a car kills her. The next time he is called to cremate a house, he ends up picking up a book and watching an old lady burn alive. This event, combined with the death of the neighbor, prompted him to seek out a reading teacher he had met before this story. He and the professor begin to plan the downfall of society and the fire department. Just when you think things are going to get better, he is ordered to burn down his house, after which he burns his boss with a flamethrower. This makes him a fugitive from justice. He then fled the scene and eventually escaped the manhunt. After a while, he meets other people on the run because of their literary culture. The next day, the town he fled is destroyed by an atomic explosion and the tramps go to help the survivors.a) Man against man: The only example in the story that falls into this category is the conflict that Guy has with his boss. His boss, Beatty begins to suspect Guy of illegally reading contraband and begins to take steps for Guy's downfall. First of all, Beatty is much more intelligent and educated than Guy, so he starts playing mind games to try to trip him up. He also forces Guy to burn down his house and tries to stop him. Guy comes out on top and wins the conflict by setting his boss on fire. b) Man versus himself: A good example of this type of conflict is Guy Montag's inner turmoil. This conflict was triggered by her discussions with the neighbor. She awakened a thoughtful side in him that was at odds with his socially acceptable, brainwashed side. Fittingly, this new team took over their old self after giving it some thought..
