Essay / Benefits of Non-GMO Foods - 822
Why Schools Should Provide Non-GMO Foods Genetically modified organisms are the new form of agriculture and pose a major threat to the health of the United States. If the average person were asked what a GMO was, most of them would know and be able to impart basic knowledge on the subject. A survey of 80% of 25 people knew what genetically modified foods are. Lack of knowledge and regulation about GMOs in school systems has led to increased risks among children and adolescents. Plants and animals are injected with hormones and genes from other organisms to create something completely different. By doing this, the DNA structure is completely changed into something new (rings). The American Academy of Environmental Medicine has proven that GMO foods have serious health effects: infertility, immune system problems, accelerated aging, disruption of insulin and cholesterol regulation, gastrointestinal problems and digestive problems. organs (Smith, Against The Grain Nutrition). By genetically modifying food, it cuts the work of farmers and other producers in half. By using mutant seeds, food companies are able to produce food twice as quickly and much more easily. This reduces costs and requires less work. The USDA allows human consumption of genetically modified foods without proper testing. They are aware of the health effects of this type of food (Rings). The quick and easy way to get a quick meal is to run to the drive-thru. As Americans, we always turn to fast food as an alternative to healthy eating. More than 25% of Americans eat fast food every day. Fast food restaurants earn over $50 million from daily consumption (“Fast Food Statistics”). According to Corporate Accountability International, paper consumption has many negative health effects......certified non-GMO or organic carrots do not contain these pesticides ("Are Baby Carrots Soaked in Chlorine") . It takes four simple components to make bread: water, yeast, salt and flour. Bread contains up to 60 different chemicals, all approved by the FDA. One of these chemicals is found in yoga mats and shoe rubber. This chemical is called azodicarbonamide. It is also found in 500 different grocery products (“Before You Buy Bread Again”). For the well-being and safety of future generations, America must take a stand to remove these foods from school lunches. This only harms children and adolescents. There is evidence that crime rates and drug use decrease with dietary change. The average child is overweight and the main cause lies in the food they eat. By changing the food provided to students, America will be a happy, less violent country.
