  • Essay / My Determination to Become a Physician

A career as a physician is demanding, challenging and involves a lifelong commitment to learning and growing. I didn’t make the decision to study medicine at one inspiring moment in my life. It was fueled by a lifelong curiosity for biology and more particularly human anatomy. Say no to plagiarism. So being a doctor is, in my opinion, one of the most mentally and emotionally rewarding career paths. I was able to understand the essential role of GPs during a two-week internship which ultimately led to employment within the practice. During this experience, I was able to see how varied the role of a general practitioner is. I followed a doctor who performed six-week exams on newborns and went to a nursing home to certify a death within the hour. I've witnessed more common issues like viral infections or more difficult meetings discussing end-of-life care. I was also able to provide support and comfort to patients, which was very rewarding. An example of this would be comforting parents while waiting for an ambulance for their six week old baby. I also had the responsibility of supporting elderly patients during a change in prescription legislation. I really enjoyed it and built good relationships with patients while gaining their trust. I also learned how GPs work seamlessly as a team, especially during busy times. The partnership between doctors allowed patients to receive the best care without compromising their confidence. I also had the chance to spend a two-week internship at a center for learning disabilities. I was responsible for organizing and leading the group activities and really enjoyed the experience. This experience allowed me to develop my leadership and communication skills. During my studies in biomedicine, I gained a deeper knowledge of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. I learned valuable teamwork skills during seminars solving case studies as well as laboratory investigations. For my thesis, I received an award for an investigation comparing treatments for diabetic food ulcers. This topic is important to me as diabetes contributes significantly to the immense pressure the NHS is currently under. Outside of studying, I enjoy cooking which helps me relax and I even started a small cupcake business thanks to this interest. I volunteered with a local scout group and led various sporting and educational activities. It was a rewarding experience to see the girls learn the value of dedication, teamwork and communication through team building exercises. Keep in mind: this is just a sample.
