Regulation became an important thing in American society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, better known as the Progressive Era. The Progressive Era is a period that demonstrated the goals and difficulties that American society experienced in the early 20th century. Like big companies who use tricks and schemes that maximize their profits and benefit them, but neglect the safety and convenience of the consumer/customer. In other words, companies were cutting corners and sending out low-quality items. Business was no longer a two-way street of satisfaction. It was a way; the company provides people with an essential item, but does not value user satisfaction. The objective was to re-appropriate the standards of the business world. Transport, food and pharmaceutical products as well as road regulations came into force and developed considerably. So why did government regulation expand during the 20th century? Why has it become a big part of America? Who or what is responsible for this sudden change of interest? Several factors led to the rise of the regulatory federal state, one being the revealing and disgusting press. Their tactics of exposing the flaws of government and big markets have led to an increase in support for regulation not only in food and drugs, but in all other regulatory processes. For example The Jungle by Upton Sinclair which exposed the meat market and its many flaws in the meat processing process. Citizens were stunned when the truth was revealed in this book and other articles that highlighted the stark reality that disgusted American consumers of meat products. I believe this book was a big step toward the height of the regulatory era and it did so without directly affecting the meat market, but... middle of paper...... Law of 1891. This law was adopted for breeders who wanted regulations likely to generate interest in “dressed” meat. This targeted Chicago meatpackers. Once again, these men were trying to put the competition at a disadvantage. Customers/consumers were worried about changes in the food and medicine market because they no longer had a clue what was in their products. Food production shifted from household preparations to general markets. As food markets have become more refined with improved technology. The difficulty of discerning the quality of their product has increased. With new and faster methods of preparing food, fears about the ingredients that make up food have increased. Preservatives and chemicals have also caused consumer concern. Health officials, pharmacists and others have tested and proven the dangers of these new additives..
