Analysis of the Weakest Link and the Wheel of FortuneThis essay will explore the conventions of two different quizzes, The Weakest Link and the Wheel of Fortune Fortune. Quiz shows are a type of game show in which you answer questions or participate in some sort of competition to win money or prizes. This essay will compare the two shows by examining the similarities and differences and will take into account the various conventions of quiz shows; rules, host, decor, lighting, music, competitors, audience, etc. The show's host, the weakest link, is Ann Robinson. Both shows have broad appeal and both had early evening primetime viewing slots before the watershed. Wheel of Fortune is an older show than The Weakest Link (1990) and is no longer in production. It now seems very old fashioned and is only shown on satellite TV during the day. The weakest link is still there even if its popularity is no longer as great. It now has an early evening slot on BBC 2. The two presenters play important but contrasting roles in the shows, but they have completely different personalities. Ann Robinson hosts the weak link and is not the nicest presenter. She is very mean, confrontational and intimidating. She faces the contestants with a very stern face and she never smiles or laughs, which makes the contestants very nervous and adds to the tension of the show. Her dress is still very black but formal, which sets the stage for the show, making it dark throughout. This is completely different from Wheel of Fortune host Nicky Campbell. He is very friendly and polite to all the candidates and enjoys chatting with them about their lives, families, etc. so that they feel calm and relaxed. He is also very tactile and stands close to competitors in a non-confrontational manner. He dresses more casually in casual light-colored open-necked shirts. These features help competitors feel very relaxed because all they have to think about is the game now.
