Essay / Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare - 1341
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare “Romeo and Juliet” was written in 1595 by William Shakespeare. The story is based on two teenagers who experience a love story. The action takes place in Verona, Italy. In this essay, I will explore how Juliet is not a typical Renaissance girl, but rather a modern day woman. First, a typical Renaissance girl was expected to respect her elders without questioning them. However, Juliette respects her elders but she does not listen to the rules they set for her. She also needs to understand that her opinions are less important than those of her parents. But she doesn't because she decides to do what she thinks is right, but not what her family wants her to do. She should look feminine in her dress. This is what she takes back. This shows that she is still, in some ways, a typical Renaissance girl. She should be loyal to her father and family. Although she is loyal, she does not listen to Capulet, who wants her hand in marriage with Paris. She is also expected to stay home and do housework. This shows us once again that she's not totally a modern day girl. Continuing, she is expected to have children at a young age. But she doesn't really want to have children at such a young age. Adding, she shouldn't be frank. But she thinks her opinion is more important. She must also agree not to hold a bank account or own her own property. It is a fact that a typical Renaissance girl should have neither property nor bank account. My own view of Juliet is that she is, in some ways, a typical Renaissance girl. But above all she tries to be independent. At the beginning of the play, Juliet is expected to marry a man called "Paris". Who is a handsome young man. She was supposed to marry him, but she is ready to marry at such a young age and to someone she doesn't know and doesn't love. She talks about being a faithful wife but won't marry him if she doesn't love him. “I’ll be like, if I look like I like it, move.” I will get married.
