    Innocence is considered to be a lack of knowledge or understanding or not having the opportunity to know and experience. Boyne characterizes Bruno's innocence in order to challenge and juxtapose the growth of the personality under the pressure of the arrival of a new environment "Out-With" which forces the character to grow. “Eyes wide open… mouth shaped like an O… arms outstretched at his sides…” (219), shows Bruno's innocence through the use of descriptive language describing the action and makes reference to the childishness of the readers' experiences, presenting his youth. The ignorance of children is here to be appreciated, in which childishness always brings out true feelings which can be effectively conveyed as a theme. “I tried to keep my mouth shut…some people might not like that” (175) is an example of flight due to fear. This may be related to previous experiences of the dinner scene which encourages innocence to descend into ignorance using self-control as an excuse. Boyne expresses ideas, issues, personalities and morals through characterization so it would not be about directing rather in a gentler way to convey the message and it is easier to accept the ideas. The author here contrasts Bruno's personality growth to illustrate the idea that everyone is corruptible by using a child as an example due to his innocent identity.
