Gregor only wants the best for them and seeing them struggle like they were made him think positively about what was best for everyone. He prefers to fight rather than see his family fight before him. However, his family did not physically or mentally see the struggle he would go through to put a few coins in his pocket. They also never asked him if he was having a hard time at work. They just hoped he would bring some money to help them. Gregor had a goal he wanted to achieve and he didn't plan on giving up any time soon.
