Essay / The Importance of Technology in Education - 1367
In an article by Matt Richtel, a New York Times writer who visited and examined a mixed-age classroom, said: “In This technology-focused class has students hunched over their laptops. , some blogging or creating Facebook pages from the perspective of Shakespeare's characters. A student compiles a list of songs from the Internet, choosing a tune by rapper Kanye West to express the emotions of Shakespeare-loving Silvius” (Richtel). He also later said the class teacher said, “Hope and enthusiasm are soaring here. But not the test results. Since 2005, reading and math scores have stagnated in Kyrene…” (Richtel) This is an example of why computers should not replace traditional education. States spend billions on technology and students and schools do not benefit. Teenagers are now surrounded by social media 24/7. This plays a huge role in distracting learning at school. Students spend up to 5 to 15 minutes a day going through a song they want to play, but they could instead spend those 15 minutes learning something new and benefiting from it. With all the data on schools using computers in their classrooms, none is compelling enough for other schools to follow suit.
