  • Essay / Mermaids - 1074

Mythological creatures, such as mermaids, are believed to be unreal. However, if mermaids existed, could they survive in the environmental conditions they live for? Honestly, yes, under absolute circumstances and the correct biological makeup, a half-human, half-fish creature could possibly be resurrected into our natural world. Since a mermaid's habitat is located in the ocean, she must adapt to its characteristics. The ocean is rich in oxygen, but low in nutrients. Also stratified, it has different known zones with distinctive components for each. For example, the upper photic zone accumulates a lot of light, but light intensity decreases rapidly with depth. Determination of zone temperature is based on light intensity. Because sunlight illuminates the surface, the water temperature is much warmer than further south, where light is scarce. To survive, mermaids would have to stay in areas that light could reach. Additionally, a mermaid is primarily composed of normal organ systems of the human body such as the digestive tract; which differs in that the supernatural being's diet is different from ours because its habitat is in the ocean rather than on land. During digestion, food is physically and chemically broken down into nutrients absorbable by the body. Two organs of the digestive system include the esophagus and the stomach. The esophagus delivers ingested materials to the stomach; which is located just below the diaphragm, a muscular wall separating the thoracic and abdominal cavity. In the stomach, food is stored and begins digestion by secreting gastric juices. Second, the mermaids' circulatory system is homogenous to ours, so oxygen and nutrients are gained while...... middle of paper ...... tizen has the same systems. Likewise, these supernatural beings are also part of the aquatic species. The two genetic orders must combine and function properly together for the mermaid myths to remain true. It is possible to detect a human-like object emerging from the water and then returning to the sea. However, staying above the water for too long can have consequences due to their gills. They must have gills, or how could they stay underwater for such long periods of time? Could mermaids give birth to live offspring without laying eggs? Perhaps, but they are not mammals and cannot reproduce sexually due to lack of reproductive organs. In addition, the species remains in pleasant habitats offering sufficient light intensity and thermal conditions. Allow humans to witness supernatural beings in plain sight.
