  • Essay / The banking sector as a positively pragmatic aspect in the...

Debating the subject of the size of banks is a bit like debating the subject of the size of government; Should a single industry play such an imperative role in the economy? Although many argue that it is unrealistic to expect an industry of this size to not profit from its role and that, as with government, the concentration of power has a history of negatively impacting On the economy, we must not forget that banking is a competitive industry that differs from government in many ways. The incessant speculation and conspiracy theories that banks are bad conglomerates can easily be dismissed by the reality of how banks operate. Although the banks' profits and therefore the salaries of the individuals who run them seem overzealous, their significant contribution to the economy serves as validation. Furthermore, the predominance of banks in the Canadian economy is not necessarily negative since it favors the expansion of the economy as a whole; services encourage extraordinary economic activity, which encourages the creation of small businesses. Most often, banks regulate the economy in a competitive way that does not hinder activity, contrary to government attempts to intervene in the economy; when this regulation comes from a competitive market and not from an invulnerable market (the government), the entire economy benefits. Therefore, the banking sector and its involvement in the economy is beneficial. The profits that banks receive as well as the above-average salaries they administer are generally considered a source of concern among Canadians. However, the banking sector's contribution to the economy is regularly overlooked, making a balanced equation appear disproportionate.
